Sholes Receives Patent for the Type-Writer, 1868

Christopher Latham Sholes

On this day in 1868, Christopher Latham Sholes receives US Patent No, 79,265 for his type-writing machine that he so creatively called the “Type-Writer.”

Sholes was not the first person to come up with a type-writing machine or to even receive a patent for one, but his version was the most commercial, useful, and practical.

The Type-Writer’s design was inspired by that of the Gutenberg printing press which revolutionized printing with its movable-type feature.

Thanks to his 1968 patent, Sholes released the first commercial typewriter, the Remington Model 1, in 1873.

Happy typing!
